On my quest to find all of the neon signs possible in a year I filled my weekend with exhibitions and searching as well as finally visiting Borough Market.

I was pretty chuffed to fit in my first visit to the market as I found a Gluten Free stall (I researched before hand) and it’s safe to say the goodies I bought were scrummy!

Hey there!

The rest of the day was filled with neon finds and exhibitions.

First stop the Joseph Kosuth exhibition at Spruth Magers. A free exhibition near London Bridge which I found on TimeOut. The sound of buzzing filled the rooms as the electricity flowed through the work illuminating the work. Check out some of the photos:

2nd stop was JEALOUS East gallery for a small exhibition, which to be honest I thought would have more than one neon sign in it, but it was a short but sweet visit. Valentines themed but not in the sickly annoying way (thank goodness!).

Creative fuel

So last weekend I went to the London Art Fair with Natalie, Vanessa and Marianna (creative team from work) to go and get some creative fuel and inspire us for work.

I’ve never been to this fair before but Vanessa and Marianna are regulars and persuaded us to buy tickets, and I’m so glad they did! It was a good afternoon filled with inspiring work from all types of artists. We saw abstract paintings, portraits, sculptures and much more. Of course I got super snap happy and took a lot of photos here are just a few (less than 100 haha) :

I would highly recommend people going to this next year it’s a great way to get inspired, especially during winter when everyone is feeling a little run down and out of juice. We came away  feeling pumped to go make some more work as currently myself and Natalie are undergoing a super make over of our website and work! Exciting times!

. The Art of Brick.

This weekend I finally got round to seeing the much talked about  ‘The Art of Brick’ exhibition at the Old Truman’s Brewery.

I went with my lovely friendling Zach on Saturday afternoon and it’s safe to say we weren’t disappointed with the show, my only niggle was the price of the ticket but the sculptures were impressive!

It was a great way to get inspired and snap happy! There is so many sculptures to see and they are all impressive. Each piece has something written about them next to it as well as how many bricks were used. The dinosaur was over 80,000! Imagine having to count all the bricks? I wonder if he ever stepped on any, because we all know how painful that can be!!

Let me know if you go along to see the exhibition and share any photos too!

Environmental Annihilation.

Darren Bailey, Environmental Annhialation

Now it’s not secret that we are all drawn to beautiful, well crafted and creative things. It’s hard not to be. So when I heard about another great art fair happening in the next couple of weeks I thought I just needed to share this with all of you.

The photo above is incredible and incase you wondered how it was made the man himself has explained here:

*PRESS RELEASE*

He coated the outside of the umbrella with fire-retardant, sticky felt pads, and the inside with tin foil. “The foil,” he explained, “served for safety and to reflect light from the six Manfrotto LED lights that were fixed on the underside to give the desired lighting for the shot. A small container fashioned from a Kinder Egg toy holder was attached to the underside of the umbrella in which I put the flu tester when it was ignited. This created the smoke in the picture.” Asked about the risk, he explained, “My creations all take time, effort, planning, research and thought to bring to life!”

The Parralax arts fair will be gracing Chelsea Town Hall on the weekend of October 24th – 25th.

There will also be over 200 other international makers, equating to over 3000 pieces of fine, decorative and applied arts. Each exhibitor is representing themselves and their work will be on sale. Some pieces may be a little bit out of my price range but be sure to check out their work if you have saved in the region of £200- £10,000.(This is their living after all).

No only will their be paintings, sculptures and printmaking but you will also be able to see jewellery, photography, ceramics, textiles and even furniture. (Perfect if you’ve just moved or decorated your place).

So if you are on the hunt for a new piece to set off your newly decorating living room or just fancy adding a bit more colour to your home what you may find comforting is that the benefit of purchasing from these wholesale markets, is that you can get expert work with lower prices that galleries offer because of their low exhibition overheads and 0% commission  and some sellers are even tax free!! (Yup that’s right no extra cost, get what you pay for!) Even if you’re not looking to purchase but just check out some new talent, the entrance is free of charge so really there is not excuse not to go check it out, go soak up some more culture and maybe you might find some inspiration. If I wasn’t in Amsterdam that weekend I’d be joining too, after all as creatives we can’t turn down free opportunities to meet like minded people and soak up some inspiration, who knows when it might come in handy!

So if you do fancy going here is the website link for further information.

Now I may have missed the boat with the back to school prep but I’m still going to do this post. Recently whilst shopping in M&S food department on Oxford Street, I came across their back to school stationary range and was pleasantly surprised with what I saw. Usually I wouldn’t class M&S as the place to get trendy stationary but this year I have been proved wrong! Don’t believe me? Check it out for yourself:

The days when you wrote I love ‘ insert guys name here’. IMG_3596

Such a cute print.

Now I may have been the only one to get excited about new stationary for the new year but now you can see why you should be?

Shame I’m living in the real world and don’t need endless fountain pens and protractors anymore, oh wait sharpies, I need those!

So whilst myself and Natalie are off work we’ve been working away on our portfolio. Working from each other’s house and also going out and about to find inspiration. I can’t stress the importance of getting up and going out the house to find will power to do work as well as motivation to produce more.

This week we went and checked out the Twinnings original shop, near the Strand, which has all their amazing flavours in as well as a mini museum at the back of the shop. We’re big fans of a cuppa so this was a nice little treat as well as break from thinking.

Even squeezed in a quick trip to Tower Hill to see the poppies:

From here then we headed over to Somerset House to check out the Summer Screen Prints exhibition which hosts artwork of films being shown this summer in their outside screenings.  Prints by Print Club London for the celebration of 10year anniversary of Film 4 screenings (yes I need to get tickets for this next year!). I love this style of work, and although the exhibition is only tiny, it was great. My favourite piece has to be ‘Gentleman prefer Blondes’ for obvious reasons really, but also because I love Marilyn Monroe.

We’ve also been making the most of the fab place that is NABs; where we’ve been able to work on our book more productively, print out new work and email a LOT of people using their agency list. (For £2 it’s a bargain!!). We owe a lot to NABs and have vowed when we’re earning good money we are going to donate some to them seen as they are classed as a charity and allow you to use their facilities for free! It’s based just off Oxford street, so it’s close to the photographers gallery. The gallery is a great little place that has some interesting exhibitions on; and with both being avid photography lovers it’s one of our favourite places to have a ‘think break’ in.

As always I took some snaps:

So this week has been productive with working on our book and website, going on book crits and taking time out to find more inspiration. It’s key to keep your creative brain going inbetween placements otherwise you can loose your mind, get stuck in a rutt and lack a lot of motivation. I’m not ashamed in saying I struggled and doubted if we were ever going to get another placement, but yes I can eat my words because this Friday we were offered a placement from the ECD, yeah those letters stand for super duper important person, at one of the top digital agencies Lowe Profero. *CHEERS * So tomorrow we start, it’s mental how quick its happened but we’re excited and so grateful. So here’s to my next month placement and hoping we get extended, keep everything crossed for us!!until mna
